Description

Avril has such expressive eyes, and I've tried to capture that without doing it in a photorealism style - how did I do?

Here is the beautiful reference image: [link]

Avril = she is so pretty, I just love her

Soon I'll be uploading a walkthrough on the lips for this piece which will hopefully give complete beginners an idea on how to vexel without feeling the need to 'livetrace' or posterize first.

Tools:Photoshop CS3, pen tool, mouse, hot chocolate, music

Faves are nice, comments are hugely appreciated, and critique is honoured.

Having vexelled Avril Lavigne in the past, I know the two challenges you face when using her as a reference... one is her nose and the other are her lips. To the viewer there isn't anything irregular to them, but they are just two zones which for some reason are harder than other parts to render well and for the most part you've nailed it!

Your aim for "photorealism" has been done very well in terms of working from the exact colouring of the reference image. However this is only if you compare them side by side. Avril is wearing heavy make up and may have fallen victim to airbrushing - who's to know. So without seeing the reference image, you might think that her skin is too perfect.

To counteract this, try adding subtle shades of grey towards the corner of the eyes, a little red around the nose area and use the off transparent green gradient to take out some of the orange/red tones from the skin to make it look less... rendered/perfect.

This isn't a critism on your technique, because the technique has been nailed, but more points to consider in the future when using a possible airbrushed reference.

I only have one issue with this piece and that's the rendering of the nose. As stated previously, Avril's nose is a bit of a nightmare to render. I feel that it lacks definition around the nostrils, especially the one on our left. It needs a little shadow behind it to show that it's there.

I think the fact you've added your own smaller modifications to the piece is great... the pink hair, the eyeshadow. I always enjoy seeing what people have added themselves. This leads me onto the eyes...

I think the eyes have been rendered very well, however I'm a bit put off with the very thick chunky eyelashes. This is possible the only area which you couldn't really put the "photorealism" tag on. They are too straight underneath the lash (as they would overhang slightly on the eyeball) and are pretty one colour. They aren't as distracting as the nose, so only a small issue.

All in all, you've done very well. You know it's Avril when looking at her and you can say photorealism. Great piece by you Leo <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h…" width="38" height="15" alt="" title="Hug"/>
